Helen's time at Nidderdale

Created by lisastaniforth 9 years ago
Way back in 2005, a new group of eager but slightly terrified year sevens walked into Nidderdale High School for the first time. Barely reaching five foot, you probably would not have been able to see Helen in the crowd; although you quite possibly would have heard her. Bubbly, popular, outgoing and intelligent - Helen made an impression on everyone she met in her five years at the school, staff and students alike. Unbeknown to many, as Helen never drew attention it herself, she spent this entire time battling with Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic illness that affects your lungs and digestive system, amongst other things, and had constant medication and hospital visits. Despite all this, Helen left Nidderdale in 2010 for St Aidan’s Sixth Form, where she continued to flourish both socially and academically. Against all the odds, in the summer of 2012 Helen received the A-level results she truly deserved – 3A*s- and was awarded with a place to study English Literature at Durham University, fulfilling her lifelong love of books and language. Very sadly, by the end of the year her illness finally took its toll and Helen passed away at home with her loving family in the December of 2012. A dry stone wall bench has been built outside Nidderdale in Helen’s memory. It was organised by a small group of her friends from her time at Nidderdale and serves as a physical reminder of how she remains close to the hearts of many and will never be forgotten. We hope that students, staff and members of the public will feel free to take a moment out of their busy day to sit on Helen’s bench and quietly remember the happy times spent at the school.
